-33 C (-27 F). With the wind, it feels like -44 C (-47F). Plugged the block heaters in on both cars this morning, but I’m not sure it’ll do much good being this cold. I had to bring the one cord inside first as it was too stiff to unravel properly.
Update: the car started up with no problems at all. Color me surprised!

Same up in Calgary. Coconut oil on the doggos’ feet and they’re good fcor 90 minute walk. No trouble starting the car, but gear shifter v stiff, and drive modes unavailable (switch freezes).

Even here, the weather isn’t what it used to be. I think it was last year that they couldn’t do the annual ice racing on a frozen lake because it didn’t freeze deep enough to be safe to drive on. Up until this last week or two, the weather has actually been really really mild. I think winter has decided to catch up on that.

That’s definitely a ways up there. Closest I have been to there is Sudbury. What sort of industry is up that way?

That’s “nope” cold for me. I’m good to around -10F. I used to do night guard in college in Minnesota, and walking around with snow pants and several pairs of long johns, etc I could only be outside for 5-10 minutes before parts of me started freezing. I’ve got better gear now, but -30F is still nasty to be out in.

Mines, mines and mines
Also some forestry but mostly mines

What kind of minerals?
I keep wondering about cobalt up that way. If they find it up there, that would be a huge boom for the economy. Sort of like Elliot Lake and Uranium.

Mostly gold mines
Many other minerals too, but only gold is worth mining for the moment.
Rouyn-Noranda is known as the copper capital.
There is also a lithium mines starting up in our area.

For some reason I have always found mining to be fascinating. Even just tunnelling is neat. I didn’t actually get to go down in it, but I have met a few people who have worked in the Sudbury nickle mine, as well as the now closed Elliot Lake uranium mine. Some pretty crazy stories to be heard!

My father, my grandfather and my great grandfather were miners. My great grandfather immigrated from Europe in the 30s.
Today mining ain’t nearly as dangerous as it was just 20 years ago.
